Bespoke-n For!

Once upon a time, when clothes were considered nothing more than a way of covering body, no one would have envisioned that it would transform into a multi-million dollar industry. Each and every stage of this development has an intriguing history attached to them.

A particular year we are intrigued by is the 1730’s, when a new trend emerged redefining luxury.

Bespoke which literally means, ‘to speak for itself’, has become the epitome of luxury. The tailors of Savile Row in London coined the word ‘Bespoke’. The custom-made suits were said to ‘be spoken’ for, which meant that the suits are reserved for exclusive clients. Handmade fabrics, hours of perfecting the garment, unique designs and a price tag to match defined ‘Bespoke’ garments ever since.

Traditionally bespoke was limited to men’s attire, but in the modern times the boundaries have expanded. Today the need for exclusivity ranges from apparels to accessories to home décor and everything in between. Bespoke is sometimes misunderstood for just its exclusivity. It is a craft, an art form which involves learning the techniques and mechanics of creating that unique piece of garment or jewelry. An art that is passed down from generations, it requires burning passion and fineness.

Raghavendra Rathore

India is no stranger to bespoke, in both olden times and today this phenomenon is omnipresent. The credit for this goes to Indian royalty, who were the biggest patrons of bespoke. Raghavendra Rathore, a fashion designer who has kept the craft alive, strongly believes that it is the royals of East Asia who made the bespoke industry what it is. Hailing from the Jodhpur royal family, he is wildly popular in India. Rathore mixes old-school fashion and modern sensibilities with the subtlety of yesteryears. His brand ‘Rathore Jodhpur’, which he began in 1994, he has not looked back and has played a major role in putting India on the international fashion map with his old world charm oozing with luxury.

Nirav Modi, one of India’s finest jewelers, Krsna Mehta, known as a purveyor of fine fashion, Gunjan Gupta, a leading product and décor designer, are names strongly associated with bespoke. There are many exclusive brands that have established themselves like a.k.a bespoke who have a customized range of clutch bags, totes, brogues, gladiators and block heeled shoes , but India has some catching up to do.

Luxury, elegance, heritage, craft are synonymous with Bespoke. To really understand this art one has to pay attention to the details, after all god is in the details!
